Chapter 12 – Drunk on Power

Clara’s Perspective

A week after I became a vampire I began to tire of eating synthetic blood substitutes.   My cousin Kendra tried to convince me of their merits but I was always left longing for the real thing.
It was then I remembered my encounter with celebrity fitness instructor Moxie Logan not long after I had turned.  She had oozed health and vitality in a way that made me crave her.

I decided to pay her a visit and, to ensure her compliance with my wishes, I used my powers to read her mind and plant a need for me in her consciousness.

Once her attention was focused on me I went on a charm offensive, the politician in me couldn’t help it.

“I just had to seek you out Moxie, I need to get in shape for my campaign and I can’t think of anyone better to train me.”

“Thanks Clara! I’d be happy to put together a plan for you. I really think you are good for this city.”

Flattery and mind control seemed to work in perfect harmony.

I knew that now was the moment to get what I really wanted.

“Excellent! We’ll get to the fitness program later. For now I need something else of yours to improve my health…”

I moved my head towards her wrist preparing to bite.

Moxie seemed unsure but she was also fascinated. I wasted no more time. I sank my teeth in and she yelped in pain. Clearly I needed more practice!

However the pain was forgotten seconds later when the endorphins, stimulated by the bite, kicked in. This was what made many humans into willing blood donors.

The rush of her blood swam in my veins as I licked the last drop from my hand. This was far more pleasurable than eating plasma fruit!

I was overcome with the need to thank Moxie for her “donation”.

Before I could stop myself I placed a kiss on her lips.
To my surprise she accepted it readily.

Overcome with lust and excitement I let her lead me to her bedroom where we made out until tiredness overcame us.

When I woke up alone the next morning I felt a wonderful sense of calm. It was like her blood and touch soothed a longing deep within me. I was ready to take on the world.

Child of the Night: The Kendra Magna Story – Chapter 10

Kendra’s Perspective:

A week after we met I was thrilled to get a phone call from Ebenezer Clavier.  Ever since I bumped into him outside the publishers I had thought about little else.

Eb, as he liked to be called, asked me on a sunset date to a funky fusion bar in Bridgeport city.  The fact that he was sensitive enough of my vampiric condition to suggest a late time of day endeared him to me even more.

I left a note for my cousin and house mate Clara, who was working late at city hall, got ready and left the apartment giddy with excitement.

Eb met me outside the bar.

“I’m so glad you came Kendra,” he grinned at me “I got here early and the wait seemed forever but now you are here I know it was worth it.”

“Thanks,” I blushed, “Shall we get a drink?”

We went inside and bought two Kyoto My Heart cocktails.

I was impressed that he was man enough not to be phased by the very feminine drink. The effect of the alcohol was instant, it made us both relax a bit more in each other’s company. After a few more drinks and relaxed conversation we decided to go outside for some privacy.

Ever since I had become a fully fledged vampire at the age of 21 I had developed a fascination with the night sky as it was the view I saw most often.

Eb listened in fascination as I pointed out the Orion Constellation and explained the mythological stories attached to it.  When I finished talking he pulled me to my feet and into his embrace.

After kissing me so hard that I felt my pulse begin to race, he pulled back and looked me straight in the eyes.

“Kendra Magna, you are a fascinating woman, would you let me escort you home?”

“Yes of course.” I replied breathlessly. I did not want this night to end.

Once we reached my apartment building I asked Eb if he wanted to come up for coffee. I know it’s a cliché but I was feeling too shy to say what I really wanted.

However once we got in the lift I wasn’t afraid to show him:

Child of the Night: The Kendra Magna Story – Chapter 9

The day after we moved into the penthouse apartment in Bridgeport, my cousin Clara put her networking skills to use.

While I sipped on some plasma juice, which was abundantly available in the city, she was on the phone to City Hall checking the plans for her first day working for the local council.

I sometimes envied her ambition and drive to succeed.  I had yet to get my career as an author off the ground. I just hoped the city would aid me with this as Clara believed that it would.

It wasn’t long before the carpool turned up to take Clara to her new job. I waved her goodbye at the door and wished her luck although I didn’t think she needed it.

Unknown to me, Clara was actually very nervous. The council in the city was much bigger and more important than that of rural Twinbrook where we came from.

She hoped that they would welcome her ideas and not laugh her out of the building.

The building itself was very imposing. It was at least twice the size of Twinbrook Town Hall  and was topped by a large copper plated dome.

When she finished her first day I decided that we should hit the town to celebrate her new job and make the most of our new urban life.

We spent a good couple of hours getting ready, we were determined to look glamorous and fit in with the cool city crowd.

We decided to try out a trendy bubble bar at a club called Aquarius. Breathing in the fruit scented bubbles made us both feel light-headed and giggly.

High on bubbles we felt less inhibited and decided to try out the rooftop dance-floor.

The view over the city was breathtaking. It was hard to believe that we now lived in such an incredible and vibrant place.

The next morning whilst I slept in, Clara somehow got herself out of bed by 6am. She made herself some breakfast and quietly left the apartment long before I rose.

When I finally managed to move myself from the comfort of my bed I decided to head down to a local publishers with samples of my work. Outside the grand building I felt hopeful as I saw titles from some of my own favourite authors in the display windows.

I dropped off my work with the receptionist and prayed it would make it onto a publishers desk. Then I wondered back out into the city dreaming of the day I’d see my own name in those windows.

I was so lost in my reverie that I almost bumped into a smartly dressed man walking towards me.

Child of the Night: The Kendra Magna Story – Chapter 8

A few days had passed since I’d agreed to turn Notzo into a vampire.
The effects of the change were not agreeing with him and he was often seen hugging the toilet bowl.

However at the end of that week his body seemed prepared to complete the change even if he wasn’t quite ready for it mentally.  It was an unnerving experience for him as he felt his blood boil in his veins.

Before he had time to understand what was happening the change took a deep hold of him and red light shone from his eyes as the transformation completed.

Now that he was a vampire, my childhood sweetheart would be like me and with me forever!

That evening we paid a visit to my mother Lucinda to break the news.
Ever since my cousin Clara’s parents had passed away I’d been making sure I spent a lot of time with my own Mum. Their deaths had brought home to me just how short and fragile human life was. Every hug I had with my Mum I cherished.

Notzo leaned in for what looked like a playful kiss of my Mum’s hand.
I giggled but the smile was soon wiped from my face.

Child of the Night: The Kendra Magna Story – Chapter 7

That Friday my Mum, Lucinda, and my Uncle Leonardo paid us a visit.  They arrived mid afternoon so I happily kept them entertained.

It was late by the time my cousin Clara returned home, she’d been putting in a lot overtime at work lately, so she offered to take her Dad home. My Mum had opted to spend the night with us so I stayed behind to make up the spare room and keep her company.

Clara’s Dad insisted on driving when they got to the car.  He didn’t drive often any more but felt more comfortable doing so with someone else present.

“You’re working too hard young lady,” he told his daughter as he drove.

“I just want to be as great at politics as you are Dad!”

“There’s more to being great at your job than putting in all the hours God sends though.  You should be thinking about finding a nice young man and settling down.”

Clara rolled her eyes. Sometimes her Dad’s traditional values grated on her.

“I don’t need a man Dad. I want to make it on my own and be in control of my money.”

“Okay honey, I just want you to be happy that’s all.”

By the time they arrived at her parents house their little disagreement in the car was forgotten and they were soon laughing and joking about her Dad’s political opponents and their weak tactics.

Her Dad asked her to stay for dinner and Clara offered to cook. They might not always see eye-to-eye but deep down Clara was a real Daddy’s girl.

It was while she was in the kitchen preparing a meal that she heard a scream from her mother, Alexandra, that made her blood run colder than mine.

“Nooooo! Please don’t take him from me!”

Her mother’s screams were in vain however as it seemed age had caught up with her father and his time on this earth was up.

After the coroner, Grim E Reaper, showed up to take the body, mother and daughter fell into each other’s arms sobbing hysterically.

“Mum, I can’t believe it, why Dad? why now?!”

Clara’s mother held her tighter as between sobs she replied.

“I don’t know darling, it must just have been his time. I wasn’t ready for it either, it doesn’t seem real right now”

Once Clara composed herself she called me to pass on the news.

“Kendra…it’s my Dad…he..well..he’s gone.”

I was confused.

“Gone? Gone where.”

“To heaven, I hope, he just passed away here at home. Please let Aunt Lucinda know. I’m going to spend the night here to look after my Mum.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My Uncle Leonardo, whom Clara had hero worshipped ever since she was a child, was dead.

I forced a smile on my face in an effort to sound reassuring.

“Sure, I’ll let my Mum know. You take care of your Mum and yourself okay?”

Clara thanked me and put down the phone.

Now I had the unenviable task of telling my Mum that her oldest brother had passed on.

Mum was shocked and upset but equally glad that we were together to comfort each other.

We hugged for a long time before reminiscing about Uncle Leonardo’s younger years until we were too tired to talk any more.It was only once we were emotionally and mentally exhausted that we turned in to bed.

The following day Clara surprised us all by going into work. She said that she felt the best way to honour her father was to continue his good work at the Town Hall.

But after work she would go straight to the graveyard and spend hours weeping at his headstone.

When she did return home she was so tired that she didn’t eat any dinner, she simply fell into a deep sleep on the living room sofa.

I’d often come down at night and find her still there in her work clothes. I’d find a blanket and cover her with it. I was truly worried about her state of mind. Continue reading

Child of the Night: The Kendra Magna Story – Chapter 6

I loved my Mum so much. Even if she did really believe that I was the vampire that the press rumours were about she never let on.

We spent the day together happily reminiscing over my younger years.

We also spoke about the difficulties I was having getting my writing career off the ground.

She had a far away look in her eyes before she responded to my problem.

“Oh Kendra, I wish my mother, your grandmother Lara was still here. She wrote and sold many children’s and adult fiction books. She would know exactly what to tell you. But I’m a sportswoman, writing isn’t my forte.”

That evening I decided to pay a visit to the Magna family area of Twinbrook’s Graveyard. A good few generations of our family are buried in a plot bought by my  great-grandparents.  I was curious to visit my Grandmother’s grave and ask her for spiritual advice.

I soon got some guidance in a more literal manner!

The ghost of my grandmother Lara appeared. Oddly I didn’t feel scared. I suppose that the dead and vampires have some strange affinity that makes us comfortable in each other’s presence.

“Gran! It’s so great to see you again!”

She smiled a luminous smile at me.

“Kendra my sweet, I am aware the you are following in my literary footsteps. I always hoped that I might pass the writing gene on to one of my own daughters. That didn’t happen, but I am pleased to see it simply skipped a generation.”

For the next few hours I got her agreement to give me tips on writing. It was such an enjoyable conversation that the time just flew by. Just before dawn she faded away but promised to be there should I need her again.

She left me with one invaluable tip.

“To write well you must first live your life and love deeply.”

I put her advice into practice the very next day.

I invited my old high school boyfriend Notzo around. The attraction between us was just as electric as it had been when we were at school.

I had worried that my vampiric transformation would have made him change his mind about being with me but he couldn’t wait to pull me into his arms.

My cousin Clara was cooking dinner and talking to us but we barely heard a word that she said. We were so wrapped up in each other.

Child of the Night: The Kendra Magna Story – Chapter 5

As I prepared to blow out the candles on my 21st birthday cake all I was thinking about was what I wanted to do with my life. I had dreams of becoming a world renowned author and getting married to Notzo.  I hardly noticed that the sun was setting.

Soon the smoke from my candles with disappearing with the day and I felt a rush of energy and excitement flow through my body as a red glowing light surrounded me.

I was suddenly acutely aware of the fact that all my friends and family were around me. It was almost as if I could hear their every thought about me as I grew into an adult.

When the transformation completed I no longer cared that all eyes were on me. I felt powerful, sexy and unstoppable.

I also finally felt confident enough to seek out my Dad, Kendrick, and ask him a few questions.

“So Dad, now that I’m grown up, what does that mean for me?”

Dad smiled, it seemed he’d been anticipating this question.

“For each vampire, as that is what you now are, the experience is different but there are several things we all have in common. You will age much slower than your human friends, you will crave blood but this can be sated by drinking plasma juice and at night you might develop powers over others that you must try not to abuse.”

I took this in with wonder. I realised that my life was going to be very different from that of my peers.

To take my mind off of my worries Dad asked me to dance.

“I feel very proud of you my daughter. You have grown up well and you are now a beautiful woman. Now, let me twirl you round that dance floor.”

I giggled.

“It’s no dance floor Dad, its my front room, but I’d be honored!”

The next morning I decided that now I was a grown woman it was time that I faced the world independently.

With this in mind I told my Mum, Lucinda, that I was thinking of moving out. I wasn’t sure how she’d take it as it would mean that she would be left living alone with our six cats. I knew that crazy cat lady was not how she had ever envisioned herself.

But she was surprisingly understanding.

“Kendra honey I get it. In fact I’ve been putting some money aside from my sports career ever since you were born. I think now is the time for you to have it and use it to put towards buying a house.”

Child of the Night: The Kendra Magna Story – Chapter 4

I had been spending so much time with my new friend Notzo that it was no surprise to my Mum, Lucinda,  when I invited him to her 60th Birthday celebrations at our house.

Mum aged very gracefully and she felt happy with all the she had achieved in her life so far.

She had recently been promoted to Football Superstar and had the admiration of the whole of Twinbrook as well as enough money for her not to have any financial worries for the rest of her life.

Mum insisted on an early night as she had a match the next day so she wished us both sweet dreams and headed off to her room.

This left me and Notzo alone to do as we pleased. Since night had fallen a rush of energy was coursing through my body so I suggested trying out the hot tub in the garden.

As we stripped down to our swimming clothes I couldn’t help but stare at his body. Notzo certainly did look after himself. Since arriving at our school he’d found himself excelling in athletics and had recently joined the running team. All that working out gave him a very muscular body, the sight of which took my breath away. From the way he looked at me it seemed the attraction was mutual and it wasn’t long before we found ourselves attempting to act on our feelings.

I’d never kissed anyone before and neither had he. So when we closed our eyes to kiss it was slightly miss timed and I ended up kissing his nose. But it was okay, we just giggled and tried again. It was the second time that the sparks really started to fly.
